Abi Clarke
In the past
i.e. Early 2020. In the past, comedians may have expected to play across the UK
for several years prior to being invited to a TV panel, and later selling an
arena tour. It's not easy right now. Comedy is a form of art that can remain
performed in front of an audience in person. But, we're not going to see arena
tours anytime very soon. One Bristol comedian, however, has been able to reach
an immense global audience during lockdown by using social media. Abi Clarke
never set out to be an internet star. The 24-year-old, living in Hen bury with
her parents, initially began making videos online "to establish a
following that was like-minded and would enjoy my stand-up comedy. "I was
performing a lot of shows in the depths of Devon to guys in their 50s who
weren't as enthusiastic about my Love Island, Sims and Twilight references. So
I went online with the intention to meet other young women who really related
to me." Abi has since appeared at Lakota Gardens, as restrictions on
lockdowns have eased however, she continues to upload her videos to Instagram,
Twitter and Tik Tok (where she recently surpassed the 500,000 mark) and draws
inspiration from sources such as her job at an establishment, a chat with a
stranger or even the girl group chat. She writes everything down on her
smartphone.
